National Tile Museum

The National Tile Museum, or Museu Nacional do Azulejo in Portuguese, is a hidden gem in Lisbon that showcases the rich history and artistry of Portugal's tile-making tradition. Located in the east end of the city, the museum is housed in the beautiful Convent of Madre de Deus, a historic building that dates back to the 16th century.

The museum's collection of tiles spans five centuries, from the 15th to the 20th century, and includes some of the most exquisite and unique examples of Portuguese tile art. Visitors can admire the intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and stunning designs that have made Portuguese tiles famous all over the world.

One of the highlights of the museum is the grand hall, which features a 23-meter-long panel depicting the conquest of Lisbon by the Moors in the 12th century. The panel is made up of over 1,000 individual tiles, each one painted by hand, and it is a true masterpiece of tile-making art.

In addition to the grand hall, the museum also houses several other galleries that showcase different aspects of Portugal's tile-making history. Visitors can explore the evolution of tile-making techniques and styles over the centuries, from the early decorative tiles of the 15th century to the elaborate Baroque and Rococo designs of the 18th century.

The museum also offers a glimpse into the cultural and social history of Portugal, as many of the tiles depict scenes from everyday life, religious stories, and historical events. Visitors can learn about the cultural and artistic influences that have shaped Portugal's tile-making tradition over the centuries, and gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and skill that goes into creating each tile.

Overall, the National Tile Museum is a unique and fascinating destination that should not be missed by anyone visiting Lisbon. It is a testament to the beauty and artistry of Portugal's tile-making tradition, and a must-visit destination for art lovers and history buffs alike.
